Come over and watch Indie Game: The Movie
We don’t talk about it much in the startup industry, but gaming is a big part of the ecosystem.
It makes sense, since many of the countries in Southeast Asia still have low credit card penetration rates and advertising rules over the mobile and desktop gaming industry. Indeed some of Southeast Asia’s largest companies are gaming companies: Garena, VNG, and Asiasoft, just to name a few.
Part of the problem may be that for startup folks, who talk about products, the gaming industry resembles more the entertainment industry. In the entertainment industry, a large amount of time and investment goes into the craft and art of creation, and sometimes there may not be a pay off for the effort. It’s a high risk business filled with people who are very passionate about playing and creating games. Nevertheless, it’s a big piece of the tech puzzle. After all, major companies in tech made their bones in gaming from Tencent’s mobile gaming play to Facebook’s partnership with Zynga.
With that in mind, we thought we’d show a great documentary about the rising indie game industry. Indeed, Singapore’s gaming industry is in its infancy. There’s solid games like Autumn Dynasty and there’s rising stars like Masquerada, which recently got a lot of attention. Is Singapore going to give birth to more games? We’ll see.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at Indie Game, the Movie. It takes us through the industry and experiences of three top indie game developers and their path to publish their games.
